What is Perfusion?

The dictionary states:

Perfusion
[pərfyo̅o̅′zhən]
Etymology: L, perfundere, to pour over
The passage of a fluid through a specific organ or an area of the body.       - Mosby's Medical Dictionary, 8th edition. © 2009, Elsevier.

....but that sounds very boring! What we do is exciting!

Simply put perfusionists with the help of the heart-lung machine take over the patient's heart and lung function by diverting blood from the patient and bypassing the heart and lungs all together! The blood is removed prior to entering the heart at the the superior and inferior vena cava and is returned just after the heart into the aorta.
